Hi to all, dear geograsphers, future GIS analysts, planners and remote sensers:)

I certainly need some public available GIS data (layers such as roads, cities, bounderies on different level of administrative units, if available, climatic, hydrologic, soil, land use, land cover-any sort of information) for Ukraine, Belarus, Estnoia, latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Czech Repubilc, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Austria and of course Poland. At least I have pretty well dataset for Russia.
I will appreciate if you will share some links or send your suggestions with whom it would be worth to contact to. Data are needed for Phd project on land use land cover change in Eastern Europe. If you also have some knowledge on public available statistics data on demographic and agriculture situation in mentioned above countries, it will be very helpful

Thank you in advance!_O_

The best person to make such a contact with is strusiek, he's doing his PhD on GIS. He hasn't been on egea recently, but try to catch him on mail.

Hey, looks like a really cute source for downloading some GIS shapefiles
http://www.diva-gis.org/gData
http://www.gadm.org ... here you can find administrative units from all over the world

Anyway, some cities are shown as multiple districts. I would be really glad if someone would send me "domestic" shapefiles of districts in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraina, and Poland ... This would help a friend of my friend doing a thesis about historic activity of forrest robbers in CE Europe ... Thanks ;)

(But when you'll get to the top, what will you do? Even the journey might be the goal, so don't hurry on your way up!)

Jan, this is very nice of you to help Sasha, but as you can see, he was looking for the shapes in January 2006. I have no Idea if Sasha will read this and aswer you.
As for me, I've just used this forum topic because I was looking for shapes from the same area. Anyway, thanks for publishing the link.

For Germany there are several WMS:

for North-Rhine Westfalia:
http://www.geoserver.nrw.de/gbdatenIT.NRW.html
- geobasis data
- Orthophotos
- topographic data
- public administration data!

for good street data use the OpenStreetMap data. You can download it from geofabrik:
http://download.geofabrik.de/
- user generated data

For Remote Sensing data I can recommend you Landsat, Data which you can Download from
http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/data/landsat/

If you need a Digital Elevation model you might want to use the gTOPO30
http://eros.usgs.gov/#/Find_Data/Products_and_Data_Available/gtopo30_infohttp://eros.usgs.gov/#/Find_Data/Products_and_Data_Available/gtopo30_info
- provided by USGS
- resolution of 30'' ~ 1km

on the longterm the economy and the environment are the same thing
