Third EGEA e-Lecture: Rock Glaciers

http://geolf.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/3rde-lecture-outlines.jpg

January 26th
18:00 CET
Lecturer: Ivar Berthling, Associate Professor at the Department of Geography at NTNU, Trondheim/Norway

The Scientific Committee has organized already two e-Lectures and this one is the 3rd EGEA e-Lecture. We will have an online lecture and every EGEAn can take part. After the presentation by Dr. Ivar Berthling we will have the possibility to ask questions and start a discussion.

The e-Lecture will be held by using the online platform WiZiQ, which is free of charge. People do not have to install anything on their computer. Furthermore it is possible to see a video of the speaker. The presenter is able to use an interactive whiteboard to visualize certain aspects, e.g. a PPT, pictures etc.

The Scientific Committee would like to encourage EGEA entities to organize some kind of local meetings to take part in the e-Lecture with a bigger group. For example you could use that event to promote EGEA at your university.

So...save the date, remind your CP's, book a room, invite other students and your professors, bake a cake and serve coffee :) - We are looking forward to this and hope you are too!

What will the e-lecture be about?

Rock glaciers are enigmatic permafrost landforms that are found in most steep high mountain areas on Earth, and also on Mars.

This lecture will tell you why they have been subject to a heated debate in the scientific community, what we may learn from them about science, chaos and order, and the story they tell about landscape development in sensitive high mountain and polar areas.

The e-lecture will start at 18:00 CET!
If you want you may already klick on this link and "register" for the class, then you will jump right in! :)

Second EGEA e-Lecture: Urban Protest

http://www.egea.eu/upload/member/3685/Urban_protest4.jpg

Revolutions in Tunesia, Egypt and other Maghreb states, demonstrations against the pensions policy of your country or the usage of nuclear power - Do you want to learn more about this? Join our next e-Lecture which will deal with "Urban Protest"!

Prof. Dr. Maarten Loopmans from the University of Leuven is going to lecture about what drives urban protest, what are its effects on urban policy making, and what are the links with wider protest movements and politics. Additionally, he will also talk about protest against urban development (which is an evident trigger for urban protest).

The Scientific Committee is organizing the 2nd EGEA e-Lecture. We will have an online lecture and every EGEAn can take part. After the presentation by Dr. Maarten Loopmans we will have the possibility to ask questions and start a discussion.

More Information will follow soon.

Scientific Exhibition at the Annual Congress 2011

The Scientific Committee will organize a poster exhibition for the Annual Congress 2011. This exhibition will give science another place in our association. There will be three possibilities to present a poster at the exhibition.

1. Organisers of Scientific Events or Events with Scientific Part

There are many events in EGEA, that have a scientific part. On these events, EGEAns learn a lot about geography. We would like to encourage all organisers, to present this output at the exhibition.

2. Presenters of the Scientific Symposium 2011

EGEAns who will present their work at the symposium during the AC 2011 are invited to create a poster for the exhibition. More information about the symposium and an open call will follow in a few weeks.

3. Every Other EGEAn

We invite every EGEAn to take part on this exhibition. There is just one restriction: Your poster have to be scientific (e.g. about your Bachelor-/Master-Thesis).

More information about this exhibition as well as some formal issues will be published in the forum.

In the next days, we will publish the posters from 2010 here.

Click on the poster to download it as a pdf-file.

A New Committee and New Projects

http://www.egea.eu/upload/member/2932/IMG_7549_kl.JPG

The Scientific Committee wants to share more information about his work with other egeans. Because of that, we decided to start our own "blog". From time to time, we will write about our work and interesting scientific events and congresses.

First, we start with our new subgroups.

Subgroups 2010/2011

The new Scientific Committee started to work. At our first live meeting in Bonn at the end of November we discussed old and new subjects and decided to work in five subgroups:

Scientific Symposium
Scientific Exhibition
e-Lecture
Workshop Manual
Promotion

In future articles of this blog you will hear more of them.
