Peacebuilding Anthropology (PA)
Annotation
Peacebuilding anthropology is a unique approach in the field of peacebuilding, which utilizes cultural anthropology and other related disciplines as a
theoretical framework, supplemented by extensive field experience. At the same time, peacebuilding anthropology is considered a direction of applied
sciences relating to cultural anthropology and ethnology. This subject explains the essence of peacebuilding, peacekeeping and confidence-building
processes against the background of theoretical approaches to ethnic/ethno-social/tribal conflicts. The main aim of the lecture is to contribute to
professionalism and viability in peacebuilding.
(Josef Oriško)
Theory of Ethno-Social Conflict (TEC)
Annotation
The term “ethnic conflict” is often generalized or misused in order to create simple and widely understandable explanation for ethno-social
processes of destructive or violent nature. Many of these conflicts result from rather different backgrounds than ethnical ones, and are caused by
different factors, many of which remain unclear and difficult to define. These causes are often debatable, and studies and reflections on this subject
are sometimes vague and unsubstantiated. There are primary and secondary causes of these conflicts, which often overlap. For example, the idea of
historical injustice as the primary cause of the 90’s conflict between Serbs and Croats in ex-Yugoslavia can be misleading, as these historical
grievances arose from some other causes, too; the specific primary causes are cultural difference and economic problems, differences between the size
of ethnic groups, and changes of boundaries or political systems. Historical injustice in this case can be considered a secondary cause.
(Josef Oriško, Miroslav Krčmář, visiting lecturer)
Ethno-Social Conflicts in the Balkans (BA)
Annotation
This subject focuses on ethnic and ethno-social conflicts, those that have occurred in the Balkans in the early nineties, after the fall of the Iron
Curtain. The subject specifies the term “Balkan”, describes ethnic structure of the Balkan Peninsula and provides a short excursion into the
Balkan history. The ethno-social conflicts and tensions are broadly displayed using two examples: the South Slavonic internal strife and the strife
between South Slavs and Albanians. The lecture goes through space and time, trying to explain why ethnicity should be excluded as the prime cause of
the Balkan conflicts. The lecturer combines theoretical knowledge with his own field experience. The lecture is supplemented by screening of films and
documentaries on the topic followed by a discussion. This lecture will provide a good background to those willing to work in the region; participants
will be also given an opportunity to broaden their critical view of recent Balkan conflicts.
(Josef Oriško, visiting lecturer)
Ethno-Social Conflicts in Caucasus (CA)
Annotation
As a follow–up to the Balkan lecture, this class delivers a comparative analysis of Balkan and Caucasus ethnic/ethno-social conflicts. The audience
can benefit from “ex-Czechoslovak” views of both lecturers, who have grass-root field experience from both ex-Yugoslavia and the ex-Soviet Union.
The lecture is supplemented by screening of films and documentaries, followed by a discussion. The main aim is to discover, describe and perceive
differences and similarities of different ethno-social strives within European East.
(Josef Oriško, Miroslav Krčmář, visiting lecturer)
International Community (IC)
Annotation
This subject deals with efforts of the International Community (IC) in conflict and post-conflict countries, and in particular with peacebuilding and
security activities of most important and most influential international organizations: the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), NATO and the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The lectures will briefly cover historical development of the organizations, their
structure, current activities and expected role in the future, and will then focus on their particular missions in various parts of the world. Case
studies will attempt to make a comparison of successful and less successful operations: UN missions in Nepal and Afghanistan; EU military and election
observation missions in African, Asian and South American countries; OSCE missions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Georgia. The goal of these lectures is to
present a brief analysis of the reasons why the International Community’s attempts at conflict resolution, peacebuilding and peacekeeping are
sometimes successful and, at times, less productive.
(Miroslav Krčmář, Markéta Černoušková, visiting lecturer)
Electoral Processes in Post-Conflict Countries (EP)
Annotation
These lectures will focus on a corner-stone process within democratization in post-conflict countries – elections. From elections completely
administered by the International Community, through UN assisted elections, to independently organized elections, we will go through various case
studies in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. Some crucial questions will be discussed – what does the term “free and fair” or “democratic”
elections mean? Are these realistically achievable? Are elections in post-conflict/developing countries profitable? Would traditional ways of
selecting authorities work better? The goal of this subject is to open students’ mind to questions which probe the fundamentals of electoral
processes; it also tries to present elections as living and flexible processes, which can cement healthy political systems but can also be used or
misused for particular goals.
(Markéta Černoušková, Miroslav Krčmář)
Coming April EGEA will once again participate in the most legendary student race of Europe. Every year a total amount of 8.500 athletes take part in
the race, thanks to this the race is mentioned in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest relay race in the world! We hope to set a new record ourselves by having the best
ranking of EGEA ever! (Does anyone actually know what the best ranking is up until now? )
After the race we will join the biggest student party of Europe at the campus of Enschede University!
After last year's teaming up with another student association from Utrecht we decided to try to form an All-EGEA-team like the years before last year.
We hope to fill the 25 places in the team with only EGEAns. There are places for 17 gentlemen and 8 ladies.
For the ones who are not familiar with the race:
The Batavierenrace is a relay race between Nijmegen and Enschede. 25 persons
will run a total amount of 175 kilometers, true Nijmegen, a small area of Germany and eventually Enschede. The length of the stages differ from ± 3
km to 11 km.
Do you like to run and do you want to be part of the biggest relay race in Europe? And... The biggest student party in Europe, afterwards at the
campus of Enschede University?! Please, sign up and be part of a wonderful weekend!
By the way:
Any suggestions for a team name are welcome! Please post them on the forum and we will check if we can try to change our current team name, because we
already had to sign up the team
This April EGEA will celebrate its 25th birthday. To celebrate this the founding entities Barcelona, Warszawa and Utrecht invite everyone to join us
on an international weekend of birthday celebrations.
EGEA 25th Birthday Weekend
This weekend will be held from April 13 to April 16 in the Polish Jurassic Highlands, near to Krakow and Krakow Pyrzowice Airport. The programme of
the weekend will involve some traditional EGEA activities from the last 25 years and is mostly about seeing old friends, meeting new ones and having
fun! More information will follow very soon so keep an eye on this topic page for details. The registration website will also be online soon.
EGEA AACHEN and EGEA BONN will organize a pre-congress event, which will take place from the 24th until 26th of March 2012 in DÜREN
Travel Information
The train station you have to arrive is DUEREN. When you arrived in Dueren you chose the local train (RURTALBAHN) and descend at BLENS.
If you come by car to the Pre-WRC look for the address:
Hausener Gasse 5, 52385 Nideggen, Germany
Program
There will be 2 excursions:
We will move on the early paths of Industrialisation in the valley of the river Rur. We will make an excursion to the old facilities of Hoesch. Like
we will do it when we're going to the WRC, the industrial family Hoesch moved from this first location in the Ruhr Area to expand their business in
the steel industry.
Also, we want to visit an old power plant constructed in the Art Nouveau era, that is nowadays located in a National Park, to learn more about the
early electrification of the rural area.
So, don't wait, sing up and enjoy the pre-glowing of the Western Regional Congress.
At time there are still 15 free places. The event will cost 35€ (incl. travel costs to the WRC) and will take place between 24th an 26th March
2012.
Mayas (pessimists) predicted the end of the world in 2012. But what would happen after? We (optimists) say it's the beginning of a new world! Of
course this needs to be investigated..what would this new world be like? To the orga team of BeNDeLux 2012 it was clear who had to research this new
world: geographers! Hence, the theme of BeNDeLux 2012 is
2012: welcome to a new world!
Use your imagination to create this new world and dress up!
The weekend will be somewhere in the Netherlands during the last weekend of February. Exact costs will be announced.
More information as well as an event page will follow soon!!

Scientific Exhibition at the Annual Congress 2011
The Scientific Committee will organize a poster exhibition for the Annual Congress 2011. This exhibition will give science another place in our
association. There will be three possibilities to present a poster at the exhibition.
1. Organisers of Scientific Events or Events with Scientific Part
There are many events in EGEA, that have a scientific part. On these events, EGEAns learn a lot about geography. We would like to encourage all
organisers, to present this output at the exhibition.
2. Presenters of the Scientific Symposium 2011
EGEAns who will present their work at the symposium during the AC 2011 are invited to create a poster for the exhibition. More information about the
symposium and an open call will follow in a few weeks.
3. Every Other EGEAn
We invite every EGEAn to take part on this exhibition. There is just one restriction: Your poster have to be scientific (e.g. about your
Bachelor-/Master-Thesis).
More information about this exhibition as well as some formal issues will be published in the forum.
You can find the posters from the scientific exhibition 2010 in the forum.
Have a look in the forum topic from time to time. If you have any questions, post it there as well.
Rigth before the AC 2011 in Ebermannstadt, Bavaria, we - EGEA Augsburg and EGEA Tuebingen - invite you to the

Some travel information:
It is absolutely possible to arrive before friday or leave after sunday if you want to see more of Berlin
Berlin has two Airports (Schönefeld-SXF and Tegel-TXL), which can be easily reached by public transport. However, due to ecological reasons we
recommend you to come by train or bus.
The homepage of Deutsche Bahn provides you with information about
train shedules and prices for almost every connection in Europe. Unfortunately travelling by train is quite expensive in Germany. If you're lucky you
might find connections as cheap as 39€ but the normal prices are much higher
Another possibility is to come by bus. Berlin Linien Bus has
connections to and from many German cities, but also to places like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Prague and many other cities in Europe. (Price example:
Amsterdam - Berlin and back 90€)
Your host will pick you up wherever you arrive in Berlin, so you don't have to care about that.
EGEA Marburg is inviting you to experience the river Lahn in its purest form, just like the Brothers Grimm knew it when they studied here in the 19th

split up in groups and the groups will then compete, both ashore and on the raft. Don't forget your swimming suit either! The water will be warm and

Workshop
"New power from the periphery?
Stakeholders from developing countries in globalization"
Marburg (Germany), 12.-13.11.2010
Call for Papers
Over time, economic geographers have contributed with different theories and concepts to the analysis of the changing configuration of global value
chains and thus to a better understanding of globalization. So far, the debate has been dominated by a largely one-sided perspective, which primarily
has focussed on transnational companies (TNCs) from developed countries in terms of their strategies, networks and power as well as their societal and
territorial embeddedness. Doing so, it has been largely neglected that globalization processes have in many ways and increasingly been influenced by
actors from the so-called emerging markets and developing countries:
• The opening-up of many markets to foreign direct investments (FDI) usually is not a deregulation, but rather a re-regulation, in which political
actors actively define the framework conditions for economic activities of foreign investors. Priority objectives are to encourage capital inflows and
to create new jobs. In addition, aspects of knowledge transfer, infrastructure development as well as greater involvement of national stakeholders in
the global markets play a major role. Scale and success of this state control are depending on various factors such as the attractiveness of the
specific location and the political system.
• Companies from emerging and developing countries do not only compete with TNC on their home markets or act as suppliers for them, but are
increasingly developing themselves transnational activities and invest in other markets. When Indian car producers buy British car brands or when a
Chinese steel company buys mines in Australia, then the familiar perspective on globalization processes is to some extent turned upside down.
• Trade unions and NGOs in emerging and developing countries self-confidently contest the activities of TNCs and develop power to influence
globalization processes. They have organized themselves in transnational or even global networks and use these relationships. By exercising their
power they influence political actors and directly impact companies’ strategies.
Given the insufficient reception of those and similar issues in recent economic geography, the workshop aims (a) at providing an overview on recent
studies explicitly dealing with the (changing) power positions of stakeholders from emerging markets and developing countries in globalization and (b)
at critically discussing the reasons behind these developments and (c) at contributing to the conceptual understanding of such processes. With this
focus, various contemporary geographic research fields (e.g. aspects of Transnational Entrepreneurship, Global Value Chains / Global Production
Networks, etc.) will be addressed. The individual contributions should specifically lead to answering the following questions:
1. How has power distribution in processes of globalization changed towards stakeholders from developing and emerging countries?
2. Which strategies are followed by players from emerging and developing countries to generate power in existing production networks or to establish
new production networks?
3. Which role does knowledge transfer (including re-migration) play for the integration of emerging and developing countries into the global
economy?
4. How important is the specific societal embeddedness of transnational actors from emerging and developing countries on their activities in foreign
host markets?
5. Which methods are adequate for the analysis of the named aspects?
A publication of the contributions in the form of a thematic issue in a geographic journal is planned. The workshop takes place at the Department of
Geography at the Phillips University of Marburg from November 12 to 13,2010. The deadline for submitting abstracts (up to 300 words) is April 15,
2010. On the acceptance of abstracts will be decided no later than May 15, 2010. The workshop fee will be 20 Euros (10 Euros for students).

welcome. Be ready for 4 days of trekking with your backpack from 15 km to 20 km a day.
This year the Summer School is dedicated to a challenging topic: Communicating and Telling places! We are organising an interesting programme with a
blend of theory, practical cases, field visits as well as social activities!
International Summer School in Geography of Tourism
"Tourism, Culture and Territorial Development: Communicating and telling places" - 30th August – 4th September 2010
University of Bologna - RIMINI CAMPUS
There 2 scholarship opportunities reserved for applicant from EGEA (deadline 25th of May)
+ all participant that are affiliated to partners’ organisation will be entitled of a special reduction of 40% on fees (i.e. 222 Euro for those
applying by the 15th of June 2010 and 270 Euro for those that will do it later).
This year we would like to welcome you to the Dinosaurs & Alumni weekend in Stockholm from 26th to 29th of August.
Where?
We are going to stay in a scout-cottage in a suburb about 20 km north of Stockholm. The location is situated at the edge of the natural reserve
Järvafältet and good to reach by public transport.
The cottage is very simple. There are no beds, so everyone needs to bring an isolation mattress and sleeping bag (can even be purchased at IKEA or the
outlet-mall around the corner ;-)). There is enough space to host 20 persons and probably there is even a possibility to put up a tent nearby. The
house is equipped with a modern kitchen, toilets and running water, both cold and warm. As there are no showers we will include a trip to a nearby
lake into the program :-).
Costs and places?
There are 20 places. Total costs for 3 nights, food, a nice program and excursion will be 70 €. Beer and wine can be purchased at cost price.
Program possibilities:
- Excursion to Stockholm (possibility to visit the castle or Wasa museum)
- Hiking in the nature reserve and swim in a lake
- Outdoor games (swedish classics: kubb and brännboll, or even discgolf)
- Barbecue
- EGEA Dinosaur & Alumni discussions
How to get there?
Plane: There are 3 airports near Stockholm, Arlanda, Skavsta and Västerås. Several low-fare airlines are coming here (Ryanair, Easy Jet, Air Berlin,
Germanwigs...) but even the large airlines have campaigns with good prices (SAS, Air Baltic...).
From Arlanda you can take either the lokal busses (bus 583 to Märsta station) and trains (pendeltåg from Märsta)(60 SEK, takes about 1,5h) to get
to the city or you go by Flygbuss (99 SEK, ca 45 min) or Express train (240 SEK, ca 20 min) to the main station.
From Skavsta you can catch a Flygbuss or a Ryanair buss to get to the main station (about 99 SEK, takes 1,5 h).
From Västerås you can also catch a flygbuss (about 99 SEK, ca 1,5 h).
Train/Bus: There are even lots of trains and long-distance busses going to Stockholm. They arrive directly at the main station.
Ferry: For those of you coming from Finland and the Baltic countries, ferry can be a very cheap alternative. Boats from Turku, Helsinki, Tallin, Riga
and sometimes even St Petersburg are going to Stockholm (Viking Line and Tallink-Silja). From the Ferry-terminal there are busses to the city
centre.
After arriving to Stockholm you will continue by a commuter train (pendeltåg) to Jakobsberg. Then it is about a 15 min walk to get to the cottage. A
one way ticket from the central station costs 45 SEK, a three day-ticket costs 200 SEK. Tickets can be purchased at the commuter train station,
SL-center or any Pressbyrån, please note that you cannot by tickets on local busses!

publication of it. During this period we are trying to show everything we can what is important to the understanding of point of Balaton as really
special hungarian landscape by 3 workshops (workships): 1. Touristical regions in Europe-ship, 2. Enviromental friendly-ship 3. Cellar scholarship.

Draft
The Summer School is meant to be an intensive week of substantive courses. Every day you will have a lecture and a workshop of prominent speakers and
teachers. On Wednesday you will be challenged to apply your gained knowledge in an excursion. At the end of the week you will have reached the set
learning objectives (for more information see Theme and
content). Therefore you have definitely earned a Utrecht University certificate. Furthermore, you will receive ECTS (the exact amount
of ECTS will be announced soon).
Differences with congresses
The Summer School will be a different event then the normal regional congresses. The main difference is the cooperation of EGEA Utrecht with the
Faculty of Geosciences. All the lectures and workshops are going to be held by professionals (professors, specialists, junior teachers etc.). In this
way we try to achieve a high scientific level that can be expressed in ECTSs. To hand out ECTSs we also have to achieve a certain amount of learning/
working hours. Only a week will be too short to accomplish this so you have to do some preparing work. In the end this results in a setting that is a
bit more serious then the regional congresses but not less fun.
Mutual expectations
Because the Summer School is a serious scientific event, which is supported by the Faculty of Geosciences, there are some expectations.
What do we expect from you? We expect:
a thorough preparation in advance. That is, you have to have studied the course literature
a serious, (pro)active,
interested attitude during the lectures, workshops and excursion
What can you expect from us? You can expect:
an event to the nines without worries about accommodation, food and drinks
lectures, workshops, trainings and
course materials on a high scientific level
an interesting excursion day
an Utrecht University Faculty of Geosciences
accredited certificate and ECTS
attention for the FIFA World Cup semi-finals

Bridging the blue The prospect of transborder water issues in Europe
Introduction
In Africa, millions of people struggle for life, because of a lack of drinking water. Polluted water is a huge hygenic problem at the river Ganges.
Many times, abundant rainfall has caused massive floods in the United Kingdom. Sea level rise threatens the Low Countries. The anticipation of nations
on these issues, could be a serious source of conflict. The Cold War was about weapons and power, Ukraine and Russia had a row about gas in 2008/2009,
Nigeria has a history of internal conflicts about oil. There is no doubt that, especially in a globalizing world, it is not that difficult to find a
reason for problems. It might well be possible that water will be that reason in the future.
The EGEA Utrecht SummerSchool tries to give insights in this matter. The focus will be on transborder issues in Europe. A wide range of topics will be
discovered. Moreover, a form of interdisciplinary thinking will be tried to reach. That is, insights from human geography, physical geography,
environmental studies and planning studies, are coming together. There will be great attention for geopolitical issues on water,
GIS, rivers (including pollution, dehydration) and man-environment relationships, all in a
transborder and European perspective, and with a view to the future.
In the end, we hope to have bridged the blue and to be able to give a proper prospect of transborder water issues in Europe!
Learning objectives (provisionally)
The (provisional) learning objectives for the EGEA Utrecht Summer School are:
to create a common ground on water issues with different geographical insights and perspectives
to gain knowledge
about threatening geopolitical relations on water
to gain knowledge about changing physical conditions that influence the provision of
water in the future
to exchange experiences of geographers from different European countries

On the 25th of April 2009, the starting shot of the 37th edition of the Batavierenrace, held in the Netherlands, will sound. It is a relay race over
185 km from Nijmegen to Enschede, divided into 25 stages (17 men's stages and 8 women's stages) varying from 3.4 km to 11.9 km. More than 300 teams
(which means more than 7,500 students) participate in this race. This number of participants gave us a mention in the Guinness Book of Records. What's
unique about this race is the mixture of a competitive as well as a social event. At midnight on the 25th of April, the race starts and the first
runners will then dive into the night for their heroic battle against the elements and the temptations of a warm bed. This is the beginning of 18
hours of sportsmanship, which means you arrive in Enschede the 26th of April. Afterwards, the biggest student party in the Netherlands takes place,
with over 12,000 visitors! In brief, a nice opportunity to be out with your team for a few days and definitely a great experience!
EGEA Nijmegen willl arrange a team. If you want to stay some days before or afterwards in Nijmegen you're welcome!
Spring is coming & it's getting warmer day after day... m-m-m!!! That's why what could be better rather than go all together somewere?!
Why Veliky Novgorod?
Veliky Novgorod (in Russian: Вели́кий Но́вгород) is the foremost historic city of North-Western Russia. Despite its name, Novgorod is
among the most ancient cities among the Eastern Slavs. The Sofia First Chronicle first mentions it in 859. Archaeological excavations in the middle to
late twentieth century have found cultural layers dating back only to the late tenth century, the time of the Christianization of Rus.
At the weekend we're going to be thoroughly acquainted with historical part of this great land: Kremlin, fortress, monasteries, churches, cathedral...
its ancient architecture & beautiful nature!!
Also we'll have some competitions during excursion & party at night!
Orange Legion, Tartan Army, and assorted sympathisers,
David and myself want to go and watch the Scotland vs The Netherlands
game next year. We will depart, in kilt, with as many compatriots as
possible. I would like to invite you to join us! Get your kilt on or
orange outfit, and lets all go to the same pub together to watch the
game!
Lets organise ourselves soon, as prices for transport will start to
rise soon. We could go on the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam at
around £115 return which would be overnight (pissed on the ferry - be
a great laugh) and we would share cabins.
Let me know if you will join us by boat or by plane, or if (Dutchies!)
you would like to have a few Scots to stay!
Geert van Woerden is trying to organise to see both matches in the stadium, and is considering attaching some days to the trip, a tour of the
Netherlands, as people might want to see some sights too.
Please pass this on to others you think would be up for it!

March 6th - 10th 2009:
N&B RC'09 workshop "Cultural heritage: image of a country"
The main workshop’s topic: the importance of a cultural heritage like a symbol(s) of the country.
Workshop’s description
Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations,
maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Often though, what is considered cultural heritage by one generation may
be rejected by the next generation, only to be revived by a succeeding generation.
Physical or “tangible cultural heritage” includes buildings and historic places, monuments, artifacts, etc., that are considered worthy of
preservation for the future. These include objects significant to the archaeology, architecture, science or technology of a specific culture. This
kind of heritage sites often serve as an important component in a country's tourist industry, attracting many visitors from abroad as well as locally.
Could that be harmful?
The heritage that survives from the past is often unique and irreplaceable, which places the responsibility of preservation on the current generation.
Smaller objects such as artworks and other cultural masterpieces are collected in museums and art galleries.
Cultural heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural heritage is
irreplaceable source of life and inspiration.
World cultural heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located. But also some of the
sites are deeply in local people mind like the symbols of the past, war, freedom, religion, high culture and originality, etc.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seek to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of
cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. Some of the cultural sites are inscribed on the list
of World Heritage in Danger.
In our workshop we are going to discuss about the importance of the cultural objects like a symbols of the country in the world. Is it very important
to become a member of the UNESCO to have possibility to protect cultural objects and sites? UNESCO cultural objects and tentative sites (they lay
claim to become on the UNESCO list). How did the local government could take care about that? What kind of threats is for the objects and sites
(tourism, urbanization, etc.)? The main subject’s we discuss is:
Cultural objects and sites like symbols of the country (region or city);
Possibilities and measures of protection
Threat’s for the sites and objects
Importance of the UNESCO
Culture in the advertisement
Workshop leaders: Tomas Bedulskis (EGEA Vilnius) and Gintas Misiūnas (EGEA Vilnius).

(Programme Manager & Project Manager)
we are happy to announce the Committee and Congress Organisers Training Weekend!
As you all might know, we succesfully applied for EU-money this year. Since we have to spend this money in a way it will improve EGEA, we decided to
invest in a special meeting where both Committee Contact Persons and Congress Organisers will exchange knowledge and learn from 'experienced
organisers'.
We've found the entity of Vienna so kind to host us for this meeting.
Some more precise details:
*Unfortunately, the meeting is not an open event, but only for an invited group of active EGEAns. All together will be present (we invited):
- CP1 and CP2 from SciComm, ActComm, OffComm and EntSuppComm (Spokesperson and Secretary) (8 in total)
- Main organiser of WRC, ERC, NBRC, EuroMedRC and Martinus as ACO 2009 (5 in total)
- Kamila (Committee Coordinator) and Jeroen (Webcomm Coordinator) on behalf of BoE (2 in total)
Furthermore some EGEA Vienna members will join (and assist) as well as two very experienced organisers/teamcoachers.
*The meeting will be held on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of December in Vienna.
* At day-time we will have workshop sessions where we will focus on:
1. Leadership (how to motivate a committee/orga-team)
2. Communication (how to use tools -e.g. website- for efficient communication)
3. Do's and don't (learning from experiences of previous committees/orgateams)
* At night we will of course join the social activities already announced by Lole: HERE
I invite all participants to inform the organisation about their arrival and departure time in Vienna in order to arrange accommodation for all of
you.
Please POST your arrival and departure time by replying on this forum-topic.

How many places? - 40 Egeans from all around the Europe
In the location, where wild nature meets human civilization...
The unique place, which used to be on the bottom of the Black sea many thousands years ago...
2000 years ago, the roman empire was on its way to the north, conquering more and more of the territiories we call "Germany" today. German tribes were
acting separated, not able to resist the perfect war machine of the world empire...
After crossing the rhine river, 3 legions consisting of 20.000 soldiers were heading forward to conquer the "teutoburg forest", the last narrow gate
to the north-western territories.
But there was one man, knowing their tactics, uniting the german tribes...and finally stopping the roman legions - Arminius, so called "Hermann"!
The participants of "Germany Weekend`08" will be divided in 3 legions, stepping back in time, learning about history, geology and today`s importance
of the "Eastern Westphalias Heart - The Teutoburg forest"

EGEA Athens organizes on July, 4-6th a three-day activity in the island of Spetses in order to recruit staff for our newest
EU-funded activity, European Simulation Game. Visit the respective blog for more information on European Simulation Game: http://eusim08.wordpress.com/
European Simulation Game entails a project simulating the systemic nature of Earth's ecosphere and civilizations throughout the
stream of human history. It will take place this October in the islands of Ios and Santorini, with 55 participants from 11 countries of the European
Union, sponsored by YOUTH Programme of the European Commission.
Spetses is often mentioned as the island of ...Revolution, since its abundant fleet during the 1800s helped significantly the
Greek Revolution of 1821. The island preserves genuine architectural style with unique mansions, along with an uspoilt environment of Mediterranean
pineforest. Quite inspiring place for our plans regarding European Simulation Game.
Changing Climate - Changing People? The impact of Global Environmental Change on the European Society
Introduction
The process of global warming is not deniable anymore. Even in areas of moderate climate, floods and draughts are affecting the peoples’ lives. But
still, many people in the countries of Europe don’t see the problem yet. In order to prevent society from the worst consequences it is important to
change old habits as well as establish sustainable solutions in economy, technology or public transportation. We have to take action now in order to
reduce the impact of climate change in the future. Due to the importance of the topic, the two student networks Aegee and Egea have decided to host a
conference on the topic of the Impact of global environmental change on the European society.
Concept
The main object of this conference is strengthening the knowledge of young academics from all over Europe. We want to synergize by combining both the
"experts"-knowledge of geographers (EGEA) and the interdisciplinary perspective of Aegee, another European Student Organization.

Proudly presented by Students’ Representative Office of Faculty of Natural sciences, Vilnius University, The COINS 2008 is an annual international
conference for students of nature sciences. Taking place in March 2008, this year’s conference is an anniversary: the young scientists are welcome
for the fifth time already. The aims of the conference are:
o Encouraging students’ interaction and communication in scientific, social and cultural fields;
o Motivating students to do scientific research;
o Educating young conscious scientists, who are aware of and tend to reach for their goal.
o Acquainting students with the newest scientific trends;
o Giving students an opportunity to present their research to international audience;
One of the main aims of the COINS 2008 conference, as mentioned above, is to motivate the students to do research in various fields of nature
sciences. Accordingly, the range of themes chosen by participants is expected to be very wide. Consequently, the young scientists’ presentations,
due to the branch represented, will be grouped into three sections:
In section DEEP, introduced newly this year, the students are encouraged to dig, descend or even dive deeper while doing their research in Hidrology,
Geography, Geology, Meteorology etc.;
Section WIDE is about to gather “classical” naturalists, such as students of Botany, Zoology and Ecology, which are emboldened to explore as
widely as possible;
HIGH is a section including presentations of authors, ready to prove to be reaching for higher crossbars in facing the challenges of Biotechnology,
Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and other modern fields.
After presenting their works to and answering the questions of jury and the audience, the participants will have their presentations evaluated by
specialists of related fields and all students will receive the certificates confirming their participation. Furthermore, the authors of the best
works will be awarded. While the most of attention is paid to the presentations of the participating students, organizers also put all effort into
fulfilling participants’ leisure and cultural activities (see in Programme) and expanding their scientifical horizons by arranging interesting
lectures of professors from Lithuania and abroad (read more in chapter Lecturers). The COINS 2008 is not only a conference. It is a challenge to dig
deeper, seek wider and reach higher. Do you take the challenge?

You don’t have any plans yet for the 17th to 20th of August 2007? What about spending some time in the Swiss Alps?
EGEA Bern organizes the first Switzerland weekend. It will take place in a mountain cabin on 1546m over sea level in the Diemtigtal
valley (www.diemtigtal-tourismus.ch) about 1.5 hours drive south from Bern.
We don’t plan to have a very full program but to decide rather spontaneously about our activities… There will be plenty of time for hiking,
relaxing, swimming in one of the mountain lakes, barbecueing, talking, enjoying the view, breathing clean mountain air, partying, eating cheese and
chocolate, sleeping, sunbathing, drinking beer, discussing geographical topics… and so on… just having a good time.
To subscribe for this unique experience send an email with following information to egea@giub.unibe.ch: name, entity, address, birth
date and if you are vegetarian. We cannot tell you the exact costs yet but it will be around 50 euros depending on our activities and how much you

Just to refresh your knowledge, the Baikal lake is the unique natural object with the following characteristics:
- the deepest lake in the world;
- the purest water in it;

So, here it is!!!
First I would like to say that we changed the route a bit... We have estimated both positive and negative sides of teh previous one and decided that
there were too much uncertainties and dangers with transportation facilities. Moreover, 10 days is not much for such a great route, full of unexpected
things and hidden dangers. We will be FULLY responsible for you during all your trip at least, and during your stay in Russia as a whole...

Bencharov (the accommodation possibilities you may find here http://www.olkhon.info/ru/accom/)
This day we'll have a small walk to the huge sand dunes, after that we'll go to the beach and we'll take the first attempt to swim in the Baikal
Lake!!!
After that you'll have free time - you may take a bike, rent a horse or just walk around yourself.
And in the evening we'll go to BANYA - Russian Sauna!
July 4th - this day we'll travel to the Northern Cape of the Olkhon island by several mini buses - the Choboi Cape. There we'll have dinner from the
cooked OMUL (the tastiest fish of Baikal) and UKHA (traditional Russian fish soup), prepared on fire!
And again banya...
July 5th - this day we'll go to the
Shara-Nur Lake (from the Buryat language - 'Yellow Lake". It is the mineralized lake of the island, of course we'll swim there... And will get
minerals! While swimming your body seems to be red... But it is really healthy!

Now about the way back...
There will be two possibilities:

Above the seemingly endless Panonnian plain, on its southern tip, a single “island” mountain rises: not very high (539m), covered with woods, with
narrow valleys, cut by the rivers and streams heading towards either north or south, a home to many endangered species, dotted with monasteries and
archaeological sites...
Location of Fruska Gora mountain, its specific geological history and different microclimatic conditions made it very interesting and important to
science. Thanks to unique and rich deposits of fossil fauna and flora, this mountain is often called the 'mirror of geological past'.
Fruska Gora National Park is proclaimed in 1960 in order to provide permanent protection of this wonderful mountain and its surroundings, to improve
its natural resources and beauty. The area of active protection covers 25.525 square kilometers and its main characteristic is the existence of
numerous protected, rare and endangered species of both flora and fauna. National Park Fruska Gora is a member of EUROPARC - Federation of Nature and
National Parks of Europe.
Due to its outstanding natural resources, wonderful landscapes, exceptional charm and beauty, that will bring you closer to nature, Fruska Gora is an

EGEA Novi Sad is currently organizing a pilot project new in EGEA Foundation and for the first time in Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel
Management in Novi Sad. It is EGEA Job Fair (official name is Poslovi u turizmu- Berza mladih strucnjaka u turizmu, meaning Jobs in Tourism- Market of
Young Tourism Experts.
Although EGEA Alumni doesn't has any official members from Novi Sad, there are some Egeans that have already graduated and are less active in EGEA,
but they are still pretty much invovled. As some of the Alumni activities are help with employment, our "Novi Sad Alumni" came to idea to organize
such an event. Most of the students in Serbia don't have a clue what to do after they get their diploma. First step in career is still pretty much
unknown. The goal of the project is to fight unemployment among young experts in such fields like geosciences, tourism and hotel industry. (The reason
why there is such an accent on tourism is because our Department is mostly orientated to tourism geography). The mean for that are lectures divided in
three following days:
11. April
-How to write a CV?
-How to prepare yourself for a job interview?
-How do Human Resources agencies work?
12. April
-Career planning
-Networking
-Selfemployment
13. April
-Presentation of National Employment Service
-Inside Laibour Law
14. April
-Job Fair
Job Fair is the highlight of the project. Students will be given the opportunity to have direct contact with the companies, and companies can pick the
students with best qualities for their vacant jobs. We hope to create a win-win x 2 situation:
1. Students to find a job and to be prepared for the first step in their career
2. Companies to find best young experts for themselves
3. Strong marketing for our department
4. Strong marketing for EGEA
We have support from our profesors that are very excited and optimistis about the whole project (they want to make it an annual event), while the
members of the organization team are a bit reserved. It's a new event for us and EGEA, we organize it for the first time, and after that we will make
an evaluation and give an official report.

"Quiet villages and gentle, welcoming people may be the words that best describe the Maramureş region, situated in northwestern Romania .
Centuries-old traditions are still alive in the rural areas of Maramureş: in late afternoon, old women sit outside their gates coaxing coarse wool
onto spindles. Many still favour the traditional dress, white flounced blouses and striped woven aprons covering full black skirts, headscarves and
"opinci", a sort of leather ballet slipper from which heavy yarn criss-crosses over thick socks. On Sundays, even little girls wear this garb"

One day in Bucharest, special edition – (for the participants who choose to stay in Bucharest one more night)
As the region of Bern was covered by a thick layer of ice during the last glacial maximum, leftovers of glacial erosion are still present in the
landscape. To see those remains and to learn more about glaciers and their power in building landscapes and the variation of climate in time is the
main goal of the ice age seminar.
We organized the ice-age seminar not in the traditional workshop style. There will be teams working on different sub-aspects of glaciers and ice-ages,
but all participants will join the same excursions led by an expert.
For more details have a look at our website (see link above)
We would like to invite environmental sciences students from all Europe to the 1st European Environmental sciences student meeting called EURENSSA
2006 (EURopean ENvironmental Sciences Student Association 2006).
ABOUT EURENSSA
EURENSSSA 2006 is one week open-air meeting of environmental sciences and ecology students from all over Europe which will take place from 17th –
23rd July 2006. It is organized by the Student Association of geology, geography and earth science students in collaboration with the faculty of
Geography and Earth sciences, the University of Latvia.
The idea of EURENSSA is to learn more about the environment and its related subjects during various field trips and lectures held by professors and
experts, to gain on-hand experience during team-work and discussions, to share your experience during presentations and many other events. Another
important aspect of EURENSSA is to get contacts, to get to know each other, and to have a lot of fun, of course! That is why EURENSSA is an excellent
platform for understanding among different nations. Furthermore, every participant may profit from contacts with other countries, for example, when
looking for a traineeship or studies at a university abroad.
The program includes such themes as nature protection and degradation actualities in Latvia, the diversity of the Baltic Sea costal area and
consequent environmental concerns, the modelling of city’s sustainable development, the examples of successful environmental problem solutions and
visits to cultural-historical landscapes and monuments. This is a possibility to apply your unique knowledge in a different environment, to compare
the aspects of environmental sciences in various countries and to get to know the experience in environmental sciences internationally.
The official language at the meeting is English. The participation fee is 60 Euros for participants from EU countries, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland
and 30 Euros for participants who need visa for entering Latvia. You can find more information about EURENSSA 2006 together with the application form
on http://eurenssa.lu.lv.

Midsummer Party is one of the most important events in Finland. That's why EGEA Helsinki will party like crazy on this wonderful weekend... It would
be great if our EGEA friends from other entities could join us!
The sun doesn't set during the whole night (if there are no clouds, you can even see it!!), its light shines on the lake where you are floating in a
boat, relaxing with your friends, swimming... The smoke sauna is hot, the beer, however, is cold!
There is no official programme but there are many interesting, fun and very Finnish things (like fishing and digging potatoes from the ground...) to
do. It's up to you how you want to spend your days and nights! Everyone will participate in cooking and cleaning, everyone will pay for their own
food and drinks, we'll sleep (if we sleep) in tents and there are no showers. All the travelling costs are for everyone to pay by him/herself but the
accommodation is free!
The party place is in Eastern Finland, which is famous for friendly people and beautiful nature. Midsummer is known for drinking, falling from boats,
burning a bonfire and sun light all day and night long... Who could resist this combination?!

Travel tip:
How to get around?
By Train: Trains are efficent, fast and expensive, although the Deutsche Bahn offers as well a few special tickets and you can save money if you book
in advance online and as a bigger group. Still Wochend Ticketsa and the „Ländertickets“ (Valid for one Bundesland) help as well to save money.
They are valid on slow trains for a group of five for a whole day and cost about 30 Euros. More details you will find at www.bahn.de.
By Bus: Beside some conncetion to Berlin, there are not so many inter-city Busroutes. But you can save a lot of money, traveling to Germany by Bus.
Buslines are available to all bigger german cities. Check www.eurolines.com.
By Carsharing: The cheapest and most interestingh way to get around. Its a unique german way to travel. You can either go for a „Mitfahrzentrale“
and ask for registered rides to other cities or visit the homepage www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de or alternatively www.mitfahrzentrale.de . There you can
choose between the cities you want to go and see when, which rides are available, call the driver, arrange a meetingpoint and go cheap to your
destination. Its the bit more „planable“ alternative for hitchhiking, which is usualy as well no problem! If you hitchhike, keep in mind rule no.1
in Germany: Never leave the Autobahn!
By plane: Each Big City has its low budget Airport close by. To travel from abroad its easy, internal cheap flights are limited, but try
www.germanwings.de or www.dba.de. They offer a few.
The Places to play:
Hamburg
Egea contact: Sarah
Matches:
Argentinia – Cote d'Ivoire (10.6.)
Ecuador – Costa Rica (15.6.)
Ukraine – Saudi Arabia (19.6.)
Czech – Italy (22.6.)
Quarter Final (30.6.)
Nearest low cost Airport: Lübeck ( Ryanair, Wizz Air)

This is just a post to see if anyone would be interested in taking part in the exploration of the industrial heritage of Glasgow, with a special focus
on the old, no longer used, railway tunnels under the city.
Who would be interested in participating or organising?
The great thing about glasgow is that market forces play a great role in the development of the city, meaning that much of the infrastructure from the
industrial age can still be found.
By exploring these monuments of Glasgows industrial golden age, we can understand the historical and geographical development of Glasgow, and consider
the impact of this age upon Glasgow and its culture.
Of course, you will have lots of time to sightsee and go shopping, and a trip to a pub or the football can be arranged should any of you so desire.
The dates for this are yet to be confirmed, but i'm thinking about having it at the beginning of April. I hope to organise free accomodation, but,
sadly, no flats here have jacuzzis...
If any of you might be interested in this, or would like further information, then please either get in touch with me, or post a reply.
After the big success of last year's BeNeLux weekend by EGEA Groningen, EGEA Utrecht has decided to organize another one!!

Please post below if you are interested to come, before wednesday 5 october, so that we can inform the place if we want to be 24 or 56 people .

For the people interested to come to Leuven to join us for the Christmas party, a social programme will be prepared for Thursday 22 December. You
can't visit Belgium without seeing Brussel, so thats what we are planning to do. After arriving around noon, all Christmas party people will be
directed towards their shelter for the night. Afterwards, around 14h, we meet in the STUK-bar in the center of Leuven, to have a small welcome drink.
STUK is an art complex in an old building of the University of Leuven, renovated in a nice modern style since 2000, where culture lovers can find
anything they look for (dance - theather - mucis - musea - movies... )
Afterwards, Belgian railway lines will be checked for the trip to Brussels. As it has to be, christmas tradition will be respected and the christmas
market will be visited!! This market is the largest one in Belgium with wooden stables scattered on various squares, with christmas stuff, artisanal
Belgian products, and delicious food...All this is graced by an ice-skating rink, a huge huge christmas tree, a Ferris wheel, and so on. On the big
market you can find the "Electrabelnights", huge transparent balls of 3 m high which present the Atomium. This will definately warm all of you to head
back to Leuven in the evening to join the Geographers Christmas Party!
Now, what is it all about? Each year Leuven Geographers have an extra-ordinary, out of the universe christmas party, organised by geographer students
in their second year of education. They prepare appetizers, tasty menu's, desserts and afterwards entertain us with a theatrical performance. But
that's not all! The evening ends up in an unpublished party with great music, lots of drinks and many chances for meeting geographer students and
Professors.
For more details, see our website or feel free to contact us!!
it's time for a new party!!! Both Greek and Slovenians are coming to Utrecht, so time to party!!! Wear all BLUE and come to the EGEA party in K'sjot

We warmly welcome you to cosy Münster in christmas time for our second X-Mas-Special!

Hi folks,
i´d like to invite a bunch of you to have an interesting beer-excursion through franconia in end of june.
Beerography of Franconia
a 3-Day-Excursion to the Heartland of the German Beer: Franconia!
a region mostly unknown to the people living abroad, often mistaken as a part of Bavaria and that only because Napoleon gave it to the Duke of Bavaria
in 1803, can be seen as the heart of german beerography. Frankonia has the highest density of breweries in the world (1 brewery on ca. 4.500 inhabitants in average). No other region in
Germany nor in the world has as many. About 280 of them are still producing beer, most of them as very small-scale, local manufactories.
Depending on the weather-conditions, getting first impressions of this 1200-year-old town and its four local breweries inside the brewery-pubs or on the
Kellerberg, a wooded area on a hill with 24 beer garden.s
the 70.000 inhabitant medieval town (UNESCO World Heritage) with its 9 local breweries and a brewery museum.
- city tour through the medieval town of bamberg
- visit of the franconian brewery museum
day 3: Brewery-Hiking in the Franconian Switzerland.
In this national park located to east of Bamberg, 71 breweries still exist. Unfortunately we will not be able to vistit them all, but
hopefully will have a pleasant tour through the hilly region with a few refreshing stops.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Accomodation: Your nest will be situated in an old power plant building, serving now as The Marshall Brainstorm Entertainment GbR Headquaters Matrasses will be organised, so youll have to bring some
covers, sleeping bags and pillows on your own.
Transportation: We will depend on public transportation. This will also be the main part of the costs youll have to face for this trip (beside of your
beers).

*EGEA Glasgow is happy to present more information about the first ever EGEA Islands Weekend!!!*
The weekend will take place from Friday 11th March until Sunday 13th March 2005 in the lovely town of Moffat in the beautiful Scottish Borders
region.
We'll stay at the Well Road Centre (http://www.dalbeattie.com/moffat/wellroadcentre) which is a lovely big house that we get all to ourselves and has loads of
space and possibilities to do great activities!!!
The weekend has several aims:
-to get more Glasgow University students involved in EGEA and to ensure the survival of EGEA Glasgow (the rest of us are getting old and will have to
retire soon...)
-to help get more students involved from the recently-established entities of Belfast and Newcastle
-to get some other Scottish universities involved in EGEA
-and of course to show Scotland to EGEAns from the rest of Europe!!!
During the weekend we will explore Moffat and go some walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside, play games, practise our Scottish country
dancing at a traditional ceilidh (and hopefully the Irish equivalent!), and take part in other traditional Scottish, English and Irish activities (not
sure about Welsh yet!)!! We also plan to have some 'What is EGEA?' events for new participants.
The weekend will cost £35, for accommodation, food, activities, and lots of alcohol as well ... Moffat is about 1.5hrs south of Glasgow by bus - more
info later...
So! - who would like to come to Scotland??!! We can take at least 15 EGEAns from elsewhere in Europe...
So, please start promoting the EGEA Islands Weekend at your entity meetings and university!! More soon!
jeeeeh! party in Utrecht! everybody is invited to join us. put on your most colourful outfit and come to the K'sjot in Utrecht. the party is organised
by egea utrecht and storm! the party starts at 22.00. beer 1 euro!!
see you there!?!
On behalf of EGEA Glasgow I'd like to invite any interested EGEAns to the University of Glasgow Jogsok (geography society) annual Burns Supper and
Ceilidh.
It basically involves a big traditional Scottish meal with speeches about Rabbie Burns' life, followed by a party with traditional Scottish music and
dancing.
We've been running the event for several years, and it's always lots of fun. This year we hope to hold the event on 26th January, the day after Burns'
Night.
We want to invite EGEAns to celebrate this event with us, and hope to host 10-15 people , but possibly more if demand is high.
If you want to come a few days earlier and stay a few days later we can organise a short program of trips around Scotland and take you to some
lectures at our university.
Of course there's always opportunities for other parties too... So if you're interested in visiting us in Glasgow in January, post your name and
entity here as soon as possible! Looking forward to hearing from you...
A tour here which should interest those of you who are visiting Glasgow for the Religious weekend and/or The Scottish Party. On Saturday 22nd there
will be whisky tasting and talk followed by a tour of Glasgows many famous whisky bars!!!!! Sounds like a good night to me!
This is just a general post to see if anyone would be interested in taking part in a weekend long visit to some of the important religious sites in
Scotland, to find out about the historical and geographical development of religion in the country, and consider the impact of the church upon
Scottish culture. Since the history of the church in Scotland is so pivotal to the country's history in general, this may equally be of interest to
those with a broader interest in Scotland, beyond the immediate focus on churches.
The plan would be to split this into two parts. First, we would look at the story of the church in Glasgow - a city both shaped and often identified
by its ecclesiastical history. This would take the form of a walking tour through the city on the Saturday morning, going from the original heart of
the town to the newer West End, tracing the historical and geographical development of religion in the city, and stopping for a while to hear about
and have a look inside some of the old churches. There would also be a chance to visit the museum of religious life, which contains Salvadore Dali's
famous painting of the crucifixion of Christ.
The next day we would travel to Edinburgh and do a similar kind of thing, but concentrate this time upon religious sites that are nationally
significant, and places that have been used in literature to encapsulate the Scottish religious experience.
Of course, you will have lots of time to sightsee and go shopping, and a trip to a church service or the football (both being the main religions
here!) can be arranged should any of you so desire. The dates for this are yet to be confirmed, but we're thinking about having it at the end of
January to fit in with our Geography Society's Burns' Night ceilidh. There is free accomodation available too but, sadly, most flats here don't have
jacuzzis...
If any of you might be interested in this, or would like further information, then please either get in touch with me, or post a reply.

Hereby EGEA Uppsala announce that we will happily invite you for a New Year party 30 Dec-2 Jan.
So, now that was said! These are the settings: a little cosy red cottage just outside Uppsala stands there waiting for us. It has no electricity nor
running water inside, but a lovely wood-heated stove, sparkling gas lights and beds for about 25 people.
The program is preliminar, but will most likely include sauna sweating, city guiding/games, and sliding in the snow. And some consumption of delicious
food, soft and not-so-soft drinks, and friendship.
So, what are you waiting for? Go check out our homepage and read all the details!
