EUROGEO Conference Geography and Global Understanding: Connecting the Sciences - June 1st-2nd, 2012, Dublin, Ireland
Call for abstracts
Geography bridging the physical and human sciences deals with places, people and cultures. It explores international issues ranging from physical,
urban and rural environments, and their evolution, to climate, pollution, development and political-economy. Key issues are how these features are
interconnected, forming patterns and processes impacting on present and future generations. The role of geo-technologies and geoinformation would seem
to be of paramount importance.
By its nature Geography continues to connect the physical, human and technological sciences with GIS enhancing research, economic development and
production.
Papers are welcome from all areas of Geography and connected disciplines, and group sessions can be arranged.

We present to you: the next water sports event on EGEA! We will explore the Lahn River from the canoe. The Lahn is a gently flowing, medium-sized
river in central Germany. We will paddle down a strip with several easy slides and hand-operated watergates down the river from the town of Wetzlar.
We will be on the river for about 4.5 hours (~20km) with two half-hour breaks in between. Because of the length of the trip good fitness is a
prerequisite. The fee of 40€ includes the rental of the boats (3 person canoes), train ticket for Saturday and private accommodation and meals with
us in Marburg. The event is open for 21 participants and you will be able to register very soon!
Program:
Friday: arrival of the participants, dinner, party
Saturday: day-long canoe trip, bbq, party
Sunday: departure of the participants

Welcome to Norway – The Land of Trolls
GEOLF and EGEA Trondheim herby gladly invite you to join our first summer event:
Hiking through one of Norway’s most beautiful hiking trips – the Trollheimen Triangle.
The registration is open
Sign up!
The deadline for registration and payment is 1st July. But remember the rule: first come, first
serve.
It’s a trip that will offer high peaks, camping in tents and a couple of nights in one of the university’s mountain cabins. There’s couple of
days with quite a bit of walking so you’d better be in decent shape.
We would like to invite 5-6 EGEA members and 5-6 students from the local Geography Student Union (GEOLF) to join, so that together we form a group of
10-12 people. This is to raise awareness of EGEA and it’s possibilities among GEOLF members. [/color]
The trip will start on Monday, 30th July with the arrival of the participants in Oppdal and end a week later on Monday 6th
August with the departure from Oppdal.
The fee of 99 Euro will besides food, drinks, and other charges cover the transportation within Norway*, which means that you can book your flight to
Oslo/Gardermoen and easily take the train from the airport directly to Oppdal – approx. a 4 ½ to 6 hours ride.
If you chose to fly to Trondheim/Værnes the train leaves at 12:54 or 14:06. Here you will have to change at Trondheim central station, but that
shouldn’t be much of a problem – it’s a very small central station and you have over 30 min to change.
Because we want to gather everybody at the same time and for the cheapest price possible, we will book train tickets for you in
advance. That means, however, that you have to be at the train station at a certain time – almost certainly 14:45 or 16:34, depending on
when people will arrive at Oslo. Your arrival in Oppdal will then be 19:20 or 21:02. Don’t worry it’ll still be light outside
*only if you fly to Oslo/Gardermoen or Trondheim/Værnes
NB! Oslo/Torp and Oslo/Rygge do not have train connections that go directly to Oppdal. You may have to book your own ride from those
airports to Oslo Central Station. We therefore strongly recommend that you book your flight to either Oslo/Gardermoen or
Trondheim/Værnes!
A little packing list for you:
- Underwear in wool/wool blend ev. fibers
- Wool socks
- Mountain Pants (waterproof)
- Mountain Jacket w/hood (windproof and waterproof)
- Thin sweater in wool or fleece
- Hiking boots
- Gloves and a hat/cap
- Thick sweater in wool or fleece (optional)
- Extra underwear and socks
- Shorts/swimming trunks
- T-shirt, preferably in wool
- Toiletries and small towel
- Sunglasses and
sunscreen
- Headlamp/flashlight
And of course:
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Water bottle
Other useful items include:
- Camera
- Binoculars
- Pen and paper
- GPS (we have both maps, compasses and GPS, but feel
free to bring your own)
- Knife
All that should fit in a nice backpack and not weigh above 8-10 kilos. In addition to what you bring there’ll be tents, food etc. to carry, so
expect a few kilos extra. A normal backpack for this trip should weigh around 12-14 kilos including food, tents and so on.
Jeans, sneakers or other "city-clothing" is not recommended. In general cotton-clothes are bad because they doesn’t warm you anymore when they get
wet, however, wearing wool can be very hot when it’s 20 degrees outside! We don't have a clear answer on what is best, but we're sure most of you
will make good decisions!
Day 1 (30th July):
Arrival at Oslo/Gardermoen or Trondheim/Værnes airport. Those landing at Gardermoen airport have to get on the train to Oppdal which leaves at 14:45
or 16:34. Don’t be late
At Værnes the train leaves at 14:06. Please inform us where and when you’ll arrive, so that we can order the train tickets.
By 21:00 everybody should be gathered in Oppdal where we’ve rented a couple of cabins where we’ll eat a good meal, socialize and divide baggage.
Day 2 (31st July):
The trip finally starts: we’ll drive from Oppdal to Gjevilvasshytta where there’s a 3 hour trip to Kamtjønnkoia, a small cabin where we will make
camp. There’ll be possibilities for fishing, swimming and a trip to one of the nearby peaks for those interested (for example Blåhøa, 1671 m).
Day 3 (1st August):
We stay at Kamtjønnkoia where we can fish, hike nearby mountains and generally have some fun.
Day 4 (2nd August)
We’ll hike across Mellomfjellet to Trollheimshytta where we’ll make camp for two nights. Expected travel time is just 5 hours, but as normal
there’ll be possible for a top trip for those interested.
Day 5 (3rd August)
One of the main events on this trip is the mountain Snota (1668 m), it’s a day trip from Trollheimshytta and back that takes around 8 hours. We end
the day where we started so no big backpacks to drag around this day.
Day 6 (4th August)
Today there are 3 possible routes. Those who want an easy trip can go the 5 hour walk through the valley to Jøldalshytta. Option 2 is the 6 hour trip
over the mountain Geithøtta (1352 m) in the south and those in for a challenge can hike the 9 hour trip across Trollhetta (1616 m) in the north.
Day 7 (5th August)
Last day in the mountains and we’ll walk from Jøldalshytta back to the car. This is a 6-7 hour long trip through nice terrain. Then we’ll drive
back to Oppdal where showers, good food and a farewell party is waiting for us.
Day 8 (6th August)
Not much happening here: After a good breakfast you take the train back to Oslo, Trondheim or whichever way you plan to go. We’ll need your flight
schedule for this day as well to order tickets, but keep in mind that it takes around 5-6 hours to get to Oslo Gardemoen. We therefore suggest that
you don’t book flights that leave before 16:00 (if you take the train at 10:05) or 22:00 (if you take the train at 15:45).
That's basically it! As I said; the registration will open soon - stay tuned!
Your orga-team: Joakim (tour guide and main organizer), Asgeir (food), André (housing) and Jirka (food and administration)
If you want to print the poster for your university you can find a larger jpg-file here.
